The way wallpapers are made has also changed and evolved a lot over the years. In the beginning, they were made of leather with their bare hands and embossed patterns using scrolls. Later, unique, painted wallpapers glued from strips of paper came to light. Because of the way they were made, only the wealthier could afford them.
During the Han dynasty in China, the first silk-based, embroidered wallpaper appeared. Only the royal family and nobility could afford this wall decoration. However, when the secret of papermaking was discovered, the production of wallpaper also gained new momentum. A lot of experimentation has been done to perfect this wall decoration to make it easier to handle, such as tear proof. Respect for nature, morality and religion, and later fauna, mainly bird depictions and peach branch motifs appeared on the wallpapers already painted at that time.
Later, the development of the printing industry also had an impact on wallpaper production, allowing mass wallpaper production. As a result, it may have spread to average homes. Initially, it had more of a thermal insulation function, but today wallpapering has become one of the pillars of wall decoration. Thanks to the specimens with different patterns and shades, in addition to wall covering, they also became excellent for decoration, and then the creation of ribbed stripes and poster wallpapers also strengthened this function.
Nowadays, many people do not even apply one type of wallpaper in a given room, but several types, or perhaps combine them with painting, tiling or paneling. Properly and carefully applied wallpaper is not only more durable than painting, but it can also be more unique.
Nowadays we can choose from a multitude of wallpapers with countless patterns and colors. Various patterned, embossed and colourful wallpapers are very popular, which can only be limited by our creativity.
